I am HIV positive…What? Who? When? Where? Why?... Oh my friend what should we do now?

                 HIV/AIDS is ravaging South Africa like any other country in the world. Higher education in South Africa has a significant role to play in the fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS. But what are the drivers of HIV/AIDS in higher education?

The drivers of HIV/AIDS among students:

1.    Lack of finances, peer pressure, desire for fashionable clothing and current gadgets like cell phones which causes some students to turn to older men otherwise known as ‘Blessers’ who are capable of providing money in order for them to meet these needs in return for sexual favours.
2.  The use of alcohol among other drugs during residence parties. These lead to one - night stands and unprotected sex.
3.    Students fear getting pregnant and use contraceptives as opposed to protecting against HIV/AIDS. 
4.  Date rape and the stigma associated with rape leads to non reporting of such events and  treatment not being sought.
5.    Lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS treatment and protection.

Having the broader learning, teaching and research needs of the University at heart, the University Library has entered into a joint project with the University HIV/AIDS programme and SA Voices HIV Museum to provide an environment that supports the health and wellbeing of students and the entire University community. This project included the launch of a one of a kind UKZN HIV/AIDS Museum Exhibition at E.G. Malherbe Library Howard college campus.

The main aim of this UKZN HIV/AIDS Museum Exhibition is to create awareness amongst students. The exhibition conveys to students that health, including HIV and TB, are manageable and that relevant help is available.
